Introduction to Baptism

At FBC Longview, we believe baptism is a vital step of obedience in the life of a believer—an outward symbol of an inward transformation. It’s a public declaration of faith in Jesus Christ, a picture of spiritual rebirth, and a celebration of belonging to God’s family.

Here are six key truths we hold about baptism:

  • Baptism is commanded by Christ – Jesus instructed His followers to be baptized as part of making disciples.

  • Baptism means full immersion – We practice baptism by full immersion in water, symbolizing death to sin and new life in Christ.

  • Baptism follows salvation – It doesn’t save us, but it’s a response to the salvation we’ve already received.

  • Baptism is connected to salvation – While not required for salvation, baptism is closely tied to the life of faith and obedience.

  • Baptism identifies us with God’s family – It marks our participation in the global and local church community.

  • Baptism unifies the church – It’s a shared expression of faith that brings believers together across generations and backgrounds.

Who Should Be Baptized?

We believe baptism is for anyone who has put their trust in Jesus Christ for salvation. It’s a step of obedience for:

  • New believers who want to publicly declare their faith in Jesus.

  • Adults and children who understand the meaning of salvation and have made a personal decision to follow Christ.

Because baptism is a personal expression of faith, we encourage each individual to be able to clearly articulate their decision to trust in Jesus.

Before being baptized at FBC Longview, we ask everyone to meet with a pastor. This is simply a time to hear your story, answer any questions you may have, and walk through what baptism means. For children, a parent or guardian will be included in that conversation.

If you’re ready to take this step or want to learn more, we’d love to connect with you! Just reach out to office@fbc747.com.
